Isabelle Proffitt makes wood-fired, salt-glazed ceramics driven by process, material curiosity, and playful making.
Isabelle studied drawing at Kingston School of Art, graduating with a First Class BA (Hons). During this time, her practice naturally gravitated toward clay, leading her to continue her training at the renowned Clay College in Stoke-on-Trent from 2022 to 2024. After completing her training, she worked as a pottery technician and tutor at several studios in Bristol, including Bristol Folk House and Zed Alley Clayhouse. In spring 2025, she was invited to join the Wobage Workshops community—established by Michael and Sheila Casson in the 1970s—where she now works from her own studio and supports Jeremy and Petra Steward as a part-time apprentice. Whether throwing or hand-building, Isabelle approaches her practice with curiosity and a strong sense of play, always seeking a natural, free-flowing energy in her work. Decisive facets and stretched stamp impressions record the lively movement of her hands and reflect the sensitivity and responsiveness of soft clay. Working primarily in high-fired porcelain and stoneware, Isabelle uses salt-firing to enhance the tactile richness of her surfaces. This technique brings a warm softness and visual depth, accentuating the marks and gestures that emerge through her making process.
